Explores the U.S. healthcare system, including its evolution, structure, regulations, and professional roles. HIM 432. Coding and Classification Systems. 3 hours.

Introduction to medical nomenclatures and classification systems, emphasizing International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding, inpatient application, IPPS, and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs. Course Information: Previously listed as HIM 332. Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught partially or fully online. Prerequisite(s): BHIS 405 and BHIS 406 and HIM 322.

HIM 433. Coding and Reimbursement Systems. 4 hours.

Introduces ICD-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems with emphasis on coding guidelines, inpatient vs. outpatient distinctions, data quality, and reimbursement methodologies, including DRGs, APCs, IPPS, and OPPS. HIM 434. Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management. 3 hours.

Covers healthcare reimbursement, payment systems, revenue cycle components, documentation integrity, and compliance strategies to support accurate coding, effective revenue management, and fraud prevention. HIM 450. Health Information Technology and Systems. 3 hours.

Overview of information technology concepts applied to the practice of health information management. Topics include electronic health record systems, information governance, privacy and security, data collection, storage, retrieval and analysis. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 451. Health Information Management Theory and Practice. 4 hours.

Examines healthcare systems, population health, ethics, law, privacy, digital records, and data governance. Emphasizes analysis, compliance, advocacy, and system design to prepare students for advanced HIM practice across care settings. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught fully online. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Master of Science in Health Information Management program.

HIM 452. Quality Management and Data Analysis. 4 hours.

Prepares students to analyze health data with statistical tools, evaluate quality and compliance, and design projects. Emphasizes risk management, patient safety, database use, public health trends, and interprofessional communication. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 453. Principles of Management and Human Resources. 4 hours.

Principles of management with emphasis on business functions, procedures, personnel management, workforce development and productivity measurements as applied to health care settings. HIM 454. Legal Aspects, Risk Management, and Security of Health Information. 3 hours.

Principles of law, confidentiality, and ethics, and their application to health records, including risk management and security in clinical information systems. HIM 455. Health Information Systems Analysis and Design. 4 hours.

Advanced topics in information technology and systems in healthcare. Fundamentals and tools of systems analysis and design. Use of data structures in clinical information systems including data design and management. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught online. HIM 481. Healthcare Financial Management. 2 hours.

An introduction to the principles of healthcare finance. Sources of revenue and expenses, financial statement analysis, budget, and tools to analyze financial performance will be covered. HIM 486. Foundations of Health Information Management. 2 hours.

Provides students new to the health informatics field with knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system and health record content and practice. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor and enrollment in the MS in Health Informatics program or Post Master's Certificate in Health Informatics.

HIM 534. Healthcare Vocabularies and Clinical Classification Systems. 4 hours.

Explores healthcare vocabularies, classification systems, and standards, with applications in data representation, retrieval, EHR integration, interoperability, compliance, and the development and maintenance of informatics standards. HIM 557. Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management and Compliance. 4 hours.

Principles of healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle, practices in healthcare revenue cycle management, processes for compliance with laws, regulations and standards related to coding and revenue cycle, introduction to healthcare corporate compliance. HIM 574. Health Information Research Methods and Evaluation. 3 hours.

Prepares students with advanced skills in health data analytics, visualization, communication, research, and database management, emphasizing ethical, evidence-based practices in HIM, healthcare, and public health. HIM 581. Executive Healthcare Financial Management. 3 hours.

Examines healthcare finance principles, revenue sources, budgeting, staffing, and capital investment, with applied tools for cost analysis and planning in the context of evolving payment models and performance measurement systems. HIM 593. Health Information Management Capstone. 2 hours.

Students demonstrate a master of health information management concepts and skills, including development of real-world solutions to current challenges by completing and presenting an applied project. HIM 595. Health Information Management Seminar. 1 hour.

A seminar in which students explore current issues in Health Information Management including healthcare policy analysis and development, ethical issues, healthcare delivery systems, and population health, and begin to prepare their capstone project.
