Admission Requirements

Students admitted to the MPH, MS in Public Health, MS in Biostatistics, MS in Environmental Health, or MS in Epidemiology may apply for the Global Public Health Certificate. The deadline for admission to the Certificate in the fall is October 1 and the deadline for admission in the spring is February 1. Students can apply upon admittance to the School of Public Health, or during their first or second year provided they are able to complete all requirements. If for any reason, a student does not complete all required coursework to obtain the MPH or MS degree, the student may still be eligible to receive the Global Public Health Certificate.

Certificate Requirements

  • Minimum Semester Hours MPH students: 12 semester hours; MS students (Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Public Health Sciences): 17 semester hours; MS in Biostatistics students: 13 semester hours.
  • Students must maintain a 3.00/4.00 grade point average and earn a minimum letter grade of B or higher in all required and elective courses. 
  • Global Public Health Certificate core and elective coursework may count towards a degree's elective courses, depending on the number of elective hours that a given degree may have. 
  • Students cannot transfer any coursework from another institution into the certificate.

3-semester-hour elective, chosen from a wide range of courses that will deepen the knowledge of challenges and skills required to address public health problems globally.

 Other Requirements

  • Comprehensive Examination: Required for MS in Biostatistics students.
  • Thesis, Project, or Coursework-Only Options
    • MPH students: IPHS 650 (3 semester hours)
    • MS in Public Health, MS in Epidemiology, and MS in Environmental Health students: IPHS 598 (8 semester hours)
