The UIC School of Public Health (SPH) and the College of Medicine (COM) offer a joint program leading to the Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health (MD/MPH). The policies of each program with respect to admission requirements, degree requirements, and other academic requirements are applicable. Full-time students typically complete the program in four years. 

Admission Requirements

• To be considered for admission, students must take the MCAT (required by COM). Students must have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and satisfy other application requirements for each college.
• Students must first be matriculated into the COM. Informational sessions with detailed program information, career development counseling, financial aid advising, and application process guidance will be provided.
• The COM Assistant Dean for Joint Degree Programs will administer the COM joint degree selection process. Once approved by the COM for participation in the Joint Degree Program, students will be provided with a letter of support for SPH. Student applications will then be reviewed by the SPH for program acceptance. Applications will be reviewed for the MPH by the SPH Assistant Dean of Admissions and Recruitment based upon academic merit and program fit. If admissible, applicants will receive a formal letter of admission from the School of Public Health via email with registration instructions. 
• Typically, students will apply to the joint degree during their M1 Fall B term and matriculate into the joint program starting in M1 Spring A term.  

Degree Requirements

• Minimum Semester Hours Required Students must complete a minimum of 42 semester hours of coursework at SPH as required for accreditation and must complete 156 semester hours of coursework as required for the MD (inclusive of shared credit hours). Twelve semester hours are shared and counted toward both the MD and MPH requirements; therefore, the minimum required to earn both degrees is 186 semester hours.
• Shared Hours Coursework taken within the MPH program may qualify for up to 10 hours of elective credit toward the MD. The Medical Colloquia M1 Fall and M1 Spring courses will serve as a valid substitute for IPHS 457. Students will be required to meet all other curricular requirements of both the MD and MPH Generalist Concentration.
