The Minor in Health Information Management is open to all undergraduate students. Students will be admitted to the minor if they meet the following requirements:

• Minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00 at the time of application
• Completion HIM 410 with a grade of C or higher
• Submission of a request form online (due week 9 of the fall semester or spring semester prior to the start of the minor)

Students outside the College of Applied Health Sciences must also consult their home colleges about acceptability and applicability of HIM minor course credit toward their degree. Although open to students from any college at UIC, students seeking a minor will need to register for the courses needed through an HIM academic advisor in the College of Applied Health Sciences.

Requirements for the Minor

Students must complete 16 semester hours for the minor, including 7 hours of foundational courses and 9 hours within their topic of interest. The minor is flexible and allows students to create their own minor by selecting their elective topics based on what interests them and compliments their major. Depending on the student’s area of interest the minor may be completed in as little as three semesters. Due to course sequencing and the students acceptance into the minor, the minor cannot be completed in less than three semesters. All courses are taught asynchronously online in an eight‐week format. Courses must be taken in the sequence provided by the HIM program advisor. 

Enrollment Residence Requirement in the Minor

A student must complete all coursework required for the minor field during their enrollment residence at the University of Illinois Chicago. 

Note: Completion of the Minor in Health Information Management does not meet eligibility requirements for the R.H.I.A. (Registered Health Information Administrator) certification examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association.
