The School of Public Health offers two baccalaureate degree programs: the Bachelor of Arts in Public Health and the Bachelor of Science in Public Health. The Bachelor of Arts in Public Health is geared toward students with an interest in the socio-cultural determinants of health and aims to prepare students for public health practice, community engaged work, and careers and graduate education focused on social justice in health and well-being. The associated selective course options for the Bachelor of Arts largely align with social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Science in Public Health is geared toward students seeking a deeper understanding of basic and applied sciences and aims to prepare students for graduate and professional degrees and career trajectories in fields such as epidemiology and biostatistics, dentistry, environmental and occupational health sciences, medicine, and pharmacy. The associated selective course options for the Bachelor of Science include an array of bench, lab, and applied sciences.

Joint BS in Health Information Management/MS in Health Informatics

The Joint Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BSHIM) and Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) is designed for undergraduate students with outstanding academic performance who desire to pursue graduate studies in Health Informatics, and who wish to prepare themselves for advanced placement in the workplace. Students will earn the BSHIM when the student has completed at least 123 semester hours and fulfilled all baccalaureate degree requirements, and the MSHI will be awarded upon completion of the master’s program requirements, with 9 hours of coursework shared between the two degrees. This will allow students to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator exam and obtain their RHIA immediately upon completion of the BSHIM degree requirements.

Health information administrators are responsible for the management of health information systems consistent with the medical, administrative, ethical, and legal requirements of the healthcare delivery system. They process patient data, design and implement systems that will accurately record this information and make it readily retrievable, and develop and maintain quality assurance programs to assist the healthcare team in monitoring all healthcare activities.

BS in Rehabilitation Sciences

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences degree from UIC, students need to complete university, college, and program degree requirements. All candidates must have at least a 2.00/4.00 grade point average in all work taken at the University of Illinois Chicago, in all work taken in the major field, and in all work accepted by the university (transfer work plus work taken at UIC). 

AHS 100. Applied Health Sciences Seminar I. 1 hour.

Introduces students to resources at UIC. Emphasizes academic skill building, professional development, major/career exploration, health and wellness, social justice, diversity and inclusion and community engagement. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Course meets for full 16 weeks of the semester.

AHS 396. Independent Study in Applied Health Sciences. 1-4 hours.

Selected topics in applied health sciences for individual student study, with faculty approval and supervision. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing or above.

BHIS 575. Applied Statistics for Health Data Science. 3 hours.

Presents statistical foundations for health data science using statistical software like R and Minitab. The course also provides exposure to common statistical techniques, and interpretation, focusing on health care data. Course Information: Credit is not given for BHIS 575 if the student has credit in IDS 570 or IDS 575. Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. This course is taught online.

NUEL 546. Applied Statistics for Health Sciences I. 4 hours.

Covers descriptive and inferential statistics. Analyses of health-related datasets using statistical software. Focuses on the practical implementation of statistical methods rather than their mathematical underpinnings. Course Information: Prerequisite(s):Graduate-level introductory statistics course or consent of the instructor. Recommended background: Familiarity with quantitative research designs and computer proficiency. Class Schedule Information: To be properly registered, students must enroll in one Laboratory-Discussion and one Lecture-Discussion.

NUEL 547. Applied Statistics for Health Sciences II. 3 hours.

Expands on the statistical methodologies introduced in NUEL 546, with a specific emphasis on multivariate statistical approaches. Extensive use of statistical software required. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NUEL 546. Recommended background: Familiarity with quantitative research designs and computer proficiency. Class Schedule Information: To be properly registered, students must enroll in one Laboratory-Discussion and one Lecture-Discussion.
