Overview of health information management emphasizing the key concepts of the diverse range of careers in the field. Focuses on academic and professional preparation given the integrative nature of the discipline and current trends. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Credit is not given for HIM 101 if the student has credit in HIM 410 or HIM 317 or HIM 319. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught online. HIM 317. Principles of Health Information Management. 4 hours.
Uses, format and content of inpatient health records; accreditation and documentation guidelines; indexes/registries, record processing and management. Virtual lab/professional site visit required. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Field work required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): Credit or concurrent registration in HIM 410. HIM 319. Alternative Health Records. 4 hours.
Health information systems in non-hospital care settings in the US, including organization and management, resources development, economic support and reimbursement, registries, and delivery of services. Course Information: Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): HIM 317 and HIM 410; or consent of the instructor.
HIM 320. Technical Affiliation. 2 hours.
Provides an orientation to health information management practice via assignments and field work in affiliated institution’s health information management departments. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 32 credit hours of HIM course work or approval of the BSHIM Program Director.
HIM 329. Legal Aspects of Health Information Management. 3 hours.
Study of the principles of law, confidentiality and ethics, and their application in the healthcare field with particular reference to health records and health information management practice. HIM 337. Analysis of Health Care Data. 4 hours.
Analyze, interpret, and visualize healthcare data using statistical methods, software tools, and databases to support decision-making through real-world case studies and analytic reports. HIM 343. Quality Evaluation and Management. 3 hours.
Examination of processes, internal and external to an organization, used to measure, evaluate and improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of health care. Directed Practice. Course Information: Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): HIM 317 and HIM 329 or consent of the instructor. HIM 361. Human Resources Management. 3 hours.
Emphasis on management of health information management staff, including hiring, discipline, union relations, inservice education, productivity measurement. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): BHIS 480; and consent of the instructor.
HIM 367. Systems Analysis. 3 hours.
Prepares students to plan and manage health IT projects through strategic planning, project design, risk evaluation, and SDLC application, with hands-on practice in communication, change management, and workflow optimization. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught partially or fully online. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 44 semester hours of health information management coursework.
HIM 374. Health Information Research. 4 hours.
Explore healthcare data analytics using statistical methods, database tools, and research practices to inform decision-making and reporting. Create and present a research poster to demonstrate data visualization and applied analysis. Course Information: May be repeated for credit. Extensive computer use required. HIM 377. Current Issues in Health Information Management. 2 hours.
Discussion of current issues relevant to the health information management profession. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Completion of 44 semester hours of health information management coursework or consent of the instructor.
HIM 384. Clinical Practicum. 4 hours.
Consists of 160 hours of supervised management activities in a healthcare or affiliate organization or with an independent HIM professional, allowing students to practice leadership, professionalism and management skills. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Field work required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Clinical practicum hours are completed on-site at a healthcare organization during regular business hours. Prerequisite(s): Enrollment restricted to students in the last semester of the HIM program.
HIM 386. Independent Study. 1-5 hours.
An optional course where students perform lab work, field work, and/or in-depth descriptive studies regarding topics related to health information management. Course Information: May be repeated to a maximum of 5 hours. Students may register in more than one section per term. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor and enrollment in health information management or health informatics program.
HIM 410. Introduction to the Health Care System. 3 hours.
Explores the U.S. healthcare system, including its evolution, structure, regulations, and professional roles. Students examine cost, access, quality, reimbursement, and apply statistics for decision-making and performance improvement. Course Information: Previously listed as HIM 310. HIM 432. Coding and Classification Systems. 3 hours.
Introduction to medical nomenclatures and classification systems, emphasizing International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding, inpatient application, IPPS, and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs. HIM 433. Coding and Reimbursement Systems. 4 hours.
Introduces ICD-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems with emphasis on coding guidelines, inpatient vs. outpatient distinctions, data quality, and reimbursement methodologies, including DRGs, APCs, IPPS, and OPPS. HIM 450. Health Information Technology and Systems. 3 hours.
Overview of information technology concepts applied to the practice of health information management. Topics include electronic health record systems, information governance, privacy and security, data collection, storage, retrieval and analysis. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 451. Health Information Management Theory and Practice. 4 hours.
Examines healthcare systems, population health, ethics, law, privacy, digital records, and data governance. Emphasizes analysis, compliance, advocacy, and system design to prepare students for advanced HIM practice across care settings. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught fully online. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Master of Science in Health Information Management program.
HIM 452. Quality Management and Data Analysis. 4 hours.
Prepares students to analyze health data with statistical tools, evaluate quality and compliance, and design projects. Emphasizes risk management, patient safety, database use, public health trends, and interprofessional communication. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 453. Principles of Management and Human Resources. 4 hours.
Principles of management with emphasis on business functions, procedures, personnel management, workforce development and productivity measurements as applied to health care settings. HIM 454. Legal Aspects, Risk Management, and Security of Health Information. 3 hours.

Advanced topics in information technology and systems in healthcare. Fundamentals and tools of systems analysis and design. HIM 481. Healthcare Financial Management. 2 hours.
An introduction to the principles of healthcare finance. Sources of revenue and expenses, financial statement analysis, budget, and tools to analyze financial performance will be covered. HIM 486. Foundations of Health Information Management. 2 hours.
Provides students new to the health informatics field with knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system and health record content and practice. Course Information: Extensive computer use required.
