Introduces students to the management of periodontal diseases in the context of general dental practice as well as integrating basic and behavioral science into the clinical management of periodontal diseases. Course Information: Extensive computer use required.

Continuation of PERI 351. Management of periodontal disease in the context of general dental practice. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): PERI 351.

Students continue to improve skills and proficiency in the management of periodontal disease in the context of general dental practice as well as integrating basic and behavioral science into the clinical management of periodontal diseases. PERI 391. Advanced Periodontal Surgery Elective. 1 hour.

Emphasis on surgical diagnosis, treatment planning and technique for inductive, resective and plastic periodontal surgical modalities in a clinical setting. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): PERI 338 and completion of the third year clinical requirements.

PERI 392. Periodontics Literature Review Seminar. 1 hour.

Seminar to review current and classic periodontal literature with focus on topics not covered in the curriculum. Encouraged for students considering graduate studies in dentistry. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): PERI 338 and senior standing in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.

PERI 610. The Biological Basis of Periodontics. 1 hour.

Current concepts of host response mechanisms in gingival epithelium and connective tissues. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Enrollment in the postgraduate program in periodontics or the consent of the instructor.

PERI 611. Classic Periodontal Literature Review. 3 hours.

Historical and current clinical concepts of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases are studied and evaluated by review of classic literature. Course Information: May be repeated. Prerequisite(s): Enrollment in the postgraduate program in periodontics or consent of the instructor.

PERI 612. Biochemistry of Periodontal Disease. 2 hours.

A lecture-seminar course that deals specifically with the biochemistry of periodontal structures and periodontal disease, the literature and the current advances in this area. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): BCHE 411.

PERI 613. Current Periodontal Literature Seminar. 1 hour.

Critical analysis, evaluation and interpretation of current literature in periodontology. Course Information: May be repeated. Prerequisite(s): Enrollment in the Periodontics Certificate Program.

PERI 614. Perio-Prosthesis. 1 hour.

The design of fixed prosthesis devices are studied and evaluated as they affect the periodontium. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Admission to the postgraduate programs in periodontics or prosthodontics or consent of the instructor.

PERI 615. Introduction to Periodontology – Case Management. 1 hour.

Introduces 1st-year periodontal residents to treatment plans, practical exercises on commonly used surgical periodontal techniques. Course Information: Animals used in instruction. Extensive computer use required. The main component of this course are hands-on laboratory activities. Prerequisite(s): Admission to one of the AEPs at the UIC School of Dentistry and consent of the course director.

PERI 616. Advanced Periodontal Therapy – Part I. 1 hour.

Introduces advanced non-surgical and surgical concepts related to periodontology to first-year residents of the Advanced Periodontics Program. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): Admission to AEP in Periodontics at the UIC School of Dentistry and consent of the course director.

PERI 617. Advanced Periodontal Therapy – Part II. 1 hour.

Introduces advanced non-surgical and surgical concepts related to periodontology to first-year residents of the Advanced Periodontics Program. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): Credit or concurrent registration in PERI 615; and PERI 616 and admission to AEP in Periodontics at the UIC School of Dentistry.

PERI 620. Periodontics Clinic. 2-16 hours.

Students treat a wide variety of basic and advanced periodontal conditions using all currently accepted treatment rationales and procedures. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Admission to the postgraduate program in periodontics.

PERI 621. Procedural Sedation and Anesthesia – Part I. 1 hour.

First in a three-course sequence covering concepts related to sedation and anesthesia for periodontology residents in the College of Dentistry. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. This course includes a hands-on part on medical emergencies and IV sedation techniques. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Graduate Program in Periodontics and consent of the course director.

PERI 622. Procedural Sedation and Anesthesia – Part II. 1 hour.

Second in a three-course sequence covering concepts related to sedation and anesthesia for periodontology residents in the College of Dentistry. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. This course includes a hands-on part on medical emergencies and IV sedation techniques. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Graduate Program in Periodontics and consent of the course director. PERI 630. Periodontal Treatment Planning/Treatment Seminar. 1 hour.

Using student case presentations the etiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment of a wide variety of periodontal diseases and conditions are discussed and studied. Course Information: May be repeated. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Periodontics Certificate Program.

PERI 698. Periodontic Research. 1-10 hours.

A clinical or basic research experience related to periodontology and done under the guidance of a University of Illinois faculty member. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the postgraduate program in periodontics or consent of the instructor.
