HIM 101. Health Information Management First Year Seminar. 1 hour.

Overview of health information management emphasizing the key concepts of the diverse range of careers in the field. Focuses on academic and professional preparation given the integrative nature of the discipline and current trends. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Credit is not given for HIM 101 if the student has credit in HIM 410 or HIM 317 or HIM 319. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught online. HIM 317. Principles of Health Information Management. 4 hours.

Uses, format and content of inpatient health records; accreditation and documentation guidelines; indexes/registries, record processing and management. Virtual lab/professional site visit required. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Field work required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): Credit or concurrent registration in HIM 410. HIM 319. Alternative Health Records. 4 hours.

Health information systems in non-hospital care settings in the US, including organization and management, resources development, economic support and reimbursement, registries, and delivery of services. Course Information: Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): HIM 317 and HIM 410; or consent of the instructor.

HIM 320. Technical Affiliation. 2 hours.

Provides an orientation to health information management practice via assignments and field work in affiliated institution’s health information management departments. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Field work required. Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 32 credit hours of HIM course work or approval of the BSHIM Program Director.

HIM 329. Legal Aspects of Health Information Management. 3 hours.

Study of the principles of law, confidentiality and ethics, and their application in the healthcare field with particular reference to health records and health information management practice. Course Information: Note to Students: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Students must have an active UIC Net ID with valid password and access to a computer and the internet. Prerequisite(s): HIM 317 and HIM 410.

HIM 337. Analysis of Health Care Data. 4 hours.

Collection, evaluation and interpretation of HIM data will be covered. Lab section will include stats software used in HIM dept.; healthcare stats and data display. Continuing Education (CE) presentation can be used by HIM professionals CE credit. Course Information: Course Information: Taught in English. Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in BHIS 406 and Grade of C or better in HIM 410 and Grade of C or better in BHIS 460 and Grade of C or better in HIM 317. HIM 343. Quality Evaluation and Management. 3 hours.

Examination of processes, internal and external to an organization, used to measure, evaluate and improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of health care. Directed Practice. Course Information: Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): HIM 317 and HIM 329 or consent of the instructor. HIM 361. Human Resources Management. 3 hours.

Emphasis on management of health information management staff, including hiring, discipline, union relations, inservice education, productivity measurement. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): BHIS 480; and consent of the instructor.

HIM 367. Systems Analysis. 3 hours.

Fundamentals and tools of systems analysis. Students participate in a systems analysis project for directed practice experience. Focus on healthcare computer applications and facilities design and layout. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Completion of 44 semester hours of health information management coursework. HIM 374. Health Information Research. 4 hours.

Development of a research project and CEU training program are course projects. Statistical software, research principles and methodology will be used to analyze health data. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): HIM 337. Class Schedule Information: To be properly registered, students must enroll in one Laboratory and one Lecture-Discussion.

HIM 377. Current Issues in Health Information Management. 2 hours.

Discussion of current issues relevant to the health information management profession. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Completion of 44 semester hours of health information management coursework or consent of the instructor.

HIM 384. Clinical Practicum. 4 hours.

Consists of of field work and classroom presentations. Field work on-site at an affiliated health care organization. Insight, understanding, and skills in health information management practices, procedures and administration. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Field work required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 44 semester hours of health information management coursework or consent of the instructor. HIM 386. Independent Study. 1-5 hours.

An optional course where students perform lab work, field work, and/or in-depth descriptive studies regarding topics related to health information management. Course Information: May be repeated to a maximum of 5 hours. Students may register in more than one section per term. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor and enrollment in health information management or health informatics program.

HIM 410. Introduction to the Health Care System. 3 hours.

Overview of the U.S. Health Services System, including its organization and management, economic support system, health care workforce, and delivery system. Course Information: Previously listed as HIM 310. Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught partially or fully online. HIM 432. Coding and Classification Systems. 3 hours.

Introduction to nomenclatures and classification systems with an emphasis on the ICD-10-CM coding system. The use of these systems in the inpatient hospital environment will be emphasized. HIM 433. Coding and Reimbursement Systems. 4 hours.

Advanced course focusing on coding and reimbursement systems; ICD-Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, data quality management, revenue cycle, coding compliance and management reporting. HIM 450. Health Information Technology and Systems. 3 hours.

Overview of information technology concepts applied to the practice of health information management. Topics include electronic health record systems, information governance, privacy and security, data collection, storage, retrieval and analysis. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 451. Health Information Management Theory and Practice. 4 hours.

An introduction to the data elements and health information systems that comprise the patient's health record in acute and alternative settings, including records management and registries. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Meets eight weeks of the semester. Taught online. Students must have an active UIC Net ID with valid password and access to a computer and the internet. Prerequisite(s): Acceptance to the Mater of Science in Health Information Management program. HIM 452. Quality Management and Data Analysis. 4 hours.

Examination of processes used to measure and improve the quality and effectiveness of health care, including health care research statistics and data display. HIM 453. Principles of Management and Human Resources. 4 hours.

Principles of management with emphasis on business functions, procedures, personnel management, workforce development and productivity measurements as applied to health care settings. HIM 454. Legal Aspects, Risk Management, and Security of Health Information. 3 hours.

HIM 455. Health Information Systems Analysis and Design. 4 hours.

Advanced topics in information technology and systems in healthcare. Fundamentals and tools of systems analysis and design. HIM 481. Healthcare Financial Management. 2 hours.

An introduction to the principles of healthcare finance. Sources of revenue and expenses, financial statement analysis, budget, and tools to analyze financial performance will be covered. HIM 486. Foundations of Health Information Management. 2 hours.

Provides students new to the health informatics field with knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system and health record content and practice. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor and enrollment in the MS in Health Informatics program or Post Master's Certificate in Health Informatics.

HIM 534. Healthcare Vocabularies and Clinical Classification Systems. 4 hours.

Presents principles of classification systems; vocabulary used in healthcare systems; their applications in use of clinical data; representation of clinical data; data retrieval needs; development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance. HIM 557. Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management and Compliance. 4 hours.

Principles of healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle, practices in healthcare revenue cycle management, processes for compliance with laws, regulations and standards related to coding and revenue cycle, introduction to healthcare corporate compliance. HIM 574. Health Information Research Methods and Evaluation. 3 hours.

Principles of healthcare finance, sources of healthcare revenue, expenses and budgeting for health information professionals. Course Information: Extensive computer use required. HIM 593. Health Information Management Capstone. 2 hours.

Students demonstrate a master of health information management concepts and skills, including development of real-world solutions to current challenges by completing and presenting an applied project. HIM 595. Health Information Management Seminar. 1 hour.

A seminar in which students explore current issues in Health Information Management including healthcare policy analysis and development, ethical issues, healthcare delivery systems, and population health, and begin to prepare their capstone project.
