CMDE 660. DoCS Tutoring. 1-2 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to help students to transition to their teaching roles expected during residency.  They will be provided with the educational tools and skills necessary to teach in small groups and receive feedback from faculty. Course Information: May be repeated. Students may enroll in more than one section per term. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 661. Clinical Medical Spanish. 2 hours.

The purpose of the course is to increase medical student comfort level with Spanish-language interviews, examination, and patient education. Course Information: Field work required, Taught in English. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 662. Empowering Clinician-in-Training to Address Domestic Violence. 2 hours.

Students will learn the skills necessary for advocacy, screening and long-term provision of care as they assist a client suffering domestic violence. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 663. How We Die. 2 hours.

This course uses literature and film, ethical case studies and physicians’ reflections related to death and the dying process as points of reference for examining the role medicine plays in how we view and experience death. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 664. Perils of the Normal. 2 hours.

This course will examine the concept of the abnormal as it is used in biomedicine. We will spend time interrogating the formulations and functions of the Normal. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 665. Fundamentals of Clinical Reasoning. 6 hours.

Course provides support and training in key clinical skills of physicianship, including: organized history taking; targeted physical examination; patient communication; differential diagnosis construction; and interprofessional communication. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 2nd Year.

CMDE 667. Medical Ethics and Professional Standards. 2 hours.

This course offers a focused review of the principles of medical ethics, putting professional rights, duties, and responsibilities at the center, as these involve patient, peer healthcare professionals, and society. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 668. Global Mental Health. 2 hours.

This course will examine the history, interventions, and critiques of global mental health. We will explore how diagnosis, distress, and treatment are experienced in different cultural and geographic contexts. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 669. Advancing Clinical Reasoning. 6 hours.

This elective aims to help students consolidate knowledge of individual organ systems and bridge it into physicianship. Teaching will focus on challenging concepts as they relate to integrating knowledge across organ systems. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 670. Issues in the History of Modern Medicine. 2 hours.

The course will introduce the student to the changing face of medical ideas and concerns and will expose the student to some of the major areas of research in the discipline of history of medicine. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CMDE 690. Away Rotation in Medical Education. 1-15 hours.
