CPED 601. Pediatric Neurology. 4 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to develop and enhance the student’s understanding and skills in pathophysiology, physical diagnosis, and management of pediatric neurologic disease. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 2nd Year.

CPED 602. Pediatric Development. 4 hours.

The Pediatric Development elective will provide comprehensive clinical experience in primary and consultative pediatric development. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 603. Breastfeeding Medicine. 2 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to improve breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes of medical students, especially those interested in providing primary care to mothers and infants.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 604. The Craniofacial Center. 4 hours.

The elective focuses on caring for pediatric and adults with congenital and acquired craniofacial conditions.  Emphasis is on the interdisciplinary team approach for evaluating and treating these patients.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 605. Genetics. 4 hours.

This elective aims to familiarize the student with evaluating, diagnosing, and treating complex genetic and metabolic problems on the wards and in the laboratory. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 606. Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. 4 hours.

The primary objectives are to improve the data-gathering and problem-solving skills of the students and to transmit a basic core of knowledge of anemia, bleeding disorders, etc., and malignancies in children. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 607. Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonology. 4 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to develop and enhance the student’s understanding and skills in pathophysiology, physical diagnosis, and management of pediatric allergic, immunologic, and respiratory disease. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 608. Pediatric Nephrology. 4-8 hours.

Students will learn the management of hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, fluid and electrolyte, acid-base disturbances, acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, and urinary tract infections in newborns, children, and adolescent patients. CPED 609. Pediatric Infectious Diseases. 4 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to develop and enhance the student’s understanding and skills in pathophysiology, physical diagnosis, and management of pediatric allergic, immunologic, and respiratory disease. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 610. Pediatric Cardiology. 4 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to develop and enhance the student’s understanding and skills in pathophysiology, physical diagnosis and management of pediatric heart disease. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 611. Pediatric Endocrinology. 4 hours.

The purpose of this elective is to develop and enhance the student’s understanding and skills in pathophysiology, physical diagnosis, and management of pediatric endocrinologic disease. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 640. Pediatric Critical Care. 2-4 hours.

To begin the development of competency in recognizing and managing critically ill children in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit setting. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 641. Pediatric Emergency Medicine. 4 hours.

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine elective will provide comprehensive clinical experience in acute management of various urgent care concerns for pediatric patients, initial treatment and stabilization, and management/transfer. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 680. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Pediatric Sub-Internship. 4 hours.

Students will have near intern-level responsibility in caring for neonates requiring critical and step-down care. They will attend deliveries and assist with initial resuscitation efforts and also provide all subsequent care for neonates in the unit Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 681. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Sub-Internship. 4 hours.

To provide students with a pediatric-focused Sub-I. Students will have near intern-level responsibility in caring for children requiring critical and step-down care and independently managing patients with senior resident/faculty supervision.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 682. Pediatric Sub-Internship. 4 hours.

The Pediatric sub-internship aims to provide the M4 student with an intense, broad-based pediatric learning experience at the level of a PL1, utilizing direct patient care as the primary learning forum. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 690. Away Rotation in Pediatrics. 1-15 hours.

An elective in Pediatrics taken outside the University of Illinois College of Medicine with prior approval. Course Information: May be repeated. Students may enroll in more than one section per term. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 694. Special Topics in Pediatrics. 1-15 hours.

Special or new topics in Pediatrics. Course Information: May be repeated. Students may enroll in more than one section per term. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPED 696. Individualized Elective in Pediatrics. 1-15 hours.

Individualized elective in Pediatrics under the supervision of a faculty member or physician to fit students' interests or customized experiences with prior approval.
