CPSY 601. Consultation and Emergency Psychiatry. 4 hours.

The rotation aims to gain proficiency in the diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment, and disposition of acute mental illness and associated behaviors in the emergency and acute medical/surgical hospital setting. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 602. Neuropsychiatry. 4 hours.

The primary goal of this rotation is to increase the student’s understanding of the assessment and management of patients with cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral problems related to neurological diseases. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 603. Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. 4 hours.

The object of this elective is to provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments and treatment to veterans on the medical and surgical services. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 604. Psychiatric Admitting Clinic. 4 hours.

This elective will Introduce important concepts in emergency psychiatry, crisis management of patients with psychiatric disorders, and diagnostic evaluations. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 605. Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders. 4 hours.

The objective of the elective is to provide a diverse educational experience in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and other drug-dependent patients, including issues of dually diagnosed patients. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 606. Child Psychiatry. 4 hours.

The primary purpose of this rotation is to allow students to further explore and participate in various clinical, research, and didactic experiences in the field of child psychiatry as practiced at UIC. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 607. Women's Mental Health. 4 hours.

The Women’s Mental Health Elective will provide students with specialized knowledge about how psychiatric disorders relate to the female reproductive cycle and to gender-based cultural roles. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 608. Psychiatry, Culture, and Society. 2 hours.

This elective will introduce trainees to key themes in the history of psychiatry and the social provision of care for mentally ill individuals in the United States. In addition to gaining an understanding of the origins of contemporary psychiatric thought and practice, trainees will develop critical reasoning skills with respect to the complex social and culture phenomena that structure psychiatric care. Trainees will meet daily in a seminar format with the preceptor and their peers to discuss a selection of articles, book selections, and visual media. Each day, trainees will present the main argument of one of the assigned readings to their peers as well as raising critical questions for discussion. They will be expected to engage in discussions of all of the assigned readings with a degree of rigor comparable to that of a graduate seminar in the humanities or social sciences. Because of the intensity of the assigned readings, as well as the small size and brevity of the seminar, no formal examination or final paper will be required. Trainees’ performance will be assessed through their engagement with the material in these discussions as well as iteratively over the course of the seminar. This course will be offered fully online. CPSY 609. Advanced Psychiatry. 4 hours.

This elective will help the fourth-year students further develop and synthesize the responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and values learned from the M3 Clerkship, which are necessary to become an effective and professional psychiatrist. CPSY 660. Neuroscience Perspectives in Psychiatry. 2 hours.

Neuroscience Perspectives in Psychiatry will prepare students to discuss mental health topics with the same approach as other medical models of disease/treatment relationships.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CPSY 690. Away Rotation in Psychiatry. 1-15 hours.

An elective in Psychiatry taken outside the University of Illinois College of Medicine with prior approval. Course Information: May be repeated. Students may enroll in more than one section per term. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.
