CSRG 601. Fundamentals of Wound Care. 2 hours.

To provide medical and surgical experience in the treatment of complex non-healing wounds. This includes but is not limited to treating wounds of various etiologies such as diabetic, surgical, venous, arterial, and pressure wounds. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 2nd Year.

CSRG 602. Fundamentals of Minimally Invasive Laporoscopic Surgery & Robotics. 2 hours.

This elective is intended for students interested in General Surgery with an emphasis on using minimally invasive surgery i.e. laparoscopic and robotic approaches.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 2nd Year.

CSRG 603. Organ Transplantation. 2 hours.

To provide medical and surgical experience in clinical kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. Instruction is provided related specifically to transplant recipients as well as vascular access surgery and organ donation. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 2nd Year.

CSRG 605. Cardiothoracic Surgery. 4 hours.

The major objective for students participating in the cardiothoracic sub specialty is the total management of patients with cardiothoracic disease admitted directly to the cardiothoracic surgical service and in consultation to the medical service. CSRG 606. Colon and Rectal Surgery. 4 hours.

The Colon Rectal Subspecialty would place the student in an environment where an average of 5 inpatients are treated at any one time and in two patient clinics. There are also daily colonoscopy procedures. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 607. Neurosurgery. 4 hours.

This elective will provide an outstanding clinical experience in a wide spectrum of disease entities, not only involving the central and peripheral nervous systems but also the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, GI, respiratory, and other systems. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 608. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. 2-4 hours.

This course provides a unique opportunity for students interested in learning more about the field, scope, and practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 610. Pediatric Surgery. 4 hours.

This rotation will give the students a basic introduction to common problems in pediatric surgery. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 611. Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery. 4 hours.

Objectives of this program: include a broad exposure to the various aspects of plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 612. Surgical Oncology. 4 hours.

This rotation will allow medical students to develop an in-depth understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with common forms of cancer. The focus will be the integration of molecular biology into the prognosis and treatment of cancer. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 613. Trauma Surgery. 4 hours.

The student will be able to learn skills in trauma and burn care, critical care, and resuscitative care.  Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 615. Vascular Surgery. 2 hours.

The elective is to provide students with experience in evaluating and treating patients with arterial and venous diseases. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 616. Burn Surgery. 4 hours.

The purpose of the burn rotation is to offer the student a comprehensive experience in the management of burns and wound care. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 640. Surgical Critical Care. 4-8 hours.

This elective is to have the student understand the mechanism of the development of critical illness in surgical patients and to provide exposure to the various diagnostic, monitoring, and therapeutic methods used to manage critically ill patients. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 660. Anatomy and Surgery Intensive. 4 hours.

This course is for the M4 student pursuing a career in a surgical discipline. It is intended to extend the fund of anatomic knowledge through day-long, specialty-specific, cadaveric dissections, focusing on anatomical relationships. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 680. Family Medicine Sub-Internship. 4 hours.

The four-week senior experience in Family Medicine will provide an educational experience for M4 clinical clerks that offers graduates supervised responsibility for inpatient care in the area of Family Medicine. This sub internship will allow students to synthesize knowledge and skills learned in the M3 clerkship, and gain an awareness of the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that doctors that practice Family Medicine strive to acquire and maintain throughout their professional lives. You will not have the time to acquire all of these attributes yourself during the rotation, but you will understand the professional responsibilities and student-centered learning process that permits the gradual acquisition of these attributes over longer periods of time. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the care of newborns, children, prenatal / laboring patients, and adults. Course Information: Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 4th Year.

CSRG 690. Away Rotation in Surgery. 1-15 hours.

An elective in Surgery taken outside the University of Illinois College of Medicine with prior approval. Course Information: May be repeated. Students may enroll in more than one section per term. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Completion of 3rd Year.

CSRG 694. Special Topics in Surgery. 1-15 hours.

CSRG 696. Individualized Elective in Surgery. 1-15 hours.

Individualized elective in Surgery under the supervision of a faculty member or physician to fit students' interests or customized experiences with prior approval.
