Includes a review of principles and laws of physics, biochemistry, and chemistry with an emphasis on their application in the practice of nurse anesthesia.

NUNA 515. Pharmacology of Anesthetics. 3 hours.

Includes pharmacotherapeutics of inhalation anesthetics, induction agents, opioids, non-opioid analgesics, muscle relaxants, local anesthetics and adjunctive agents used in anesthesia. It also includes acute pain management. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NURS 531 and NUNA 512.

NUNA 521. Principles of Nurse Anesthesia 1. 4 hours.

Emphasizes pre-operative patient assessment, preparation of anesthesia equipment, intraoperative patient monitoring, airway management, perioperative fluid management, blood component therapy, intra-operative patient positioning and chart. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NUNA 515 and NUNA 532.

NUNA 522. Principles of Nurse Anesthesia 2. 3 hours.

A focus on anesthetic management of typical patient populations – geriatric and obese patients and common surgical procedures such as neuro, musculoskeletal, abdominal/pelvic, vascular, and pulmonary/non-cardiac thoracic. Includes relevant clinic skills. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NUNA 521.

NUNA 523. Principles of Nurse Anesthesia 3. 3 hours.

A focus on specialized patient populations - pediatric, obstetrical, and trauma patients and advanced surgical procedures including cardiac surgery and trauma surgery. Chronic pain management will be highlighted. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NUNA 522.

NUNA 525. Advanced Physiological and Pathophysiological Principles for Nurse Anesthesia Practice. 4 hours.

Advanced physiological and pathophysiological principles for nursing anesthesia. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): NURS 521.

NUNA 530. Professional Issues in Nurse Anesthesia. 3 hours.

Includes AANA practice standards, and ethical and legal issues that impact CRNA practice. Practitioner wellness, substance abuse and chemical dependence will be emphasized.

NUNA 541. Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Residency 1. 6 hours.

The first clinical course in nurse anesthesia. Integrates scientific underpinnings and basic anesthesiology principles into clinical practice. Residents administer anesthesia to healthy patients undergoing general surgical procedures. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): NUNA 521. Corequisite(s): Requires concurrent registration in NUNA 522.

NUNA 542. Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Residency 2. 6 hours.

This practicum integrates advanced concepts of anesthesia principles including anesthetic management of special populations, including pediatric, obstetric, and trauma patients. The practicum includes weekly lectures and correlative conferences. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): NUNA 541. NUNA 543. Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Residency 3. 12 hours.

This advanced practicum involves administration of anesthesia for patients undergoing cardiovascular and other special surgical procedures. It includes insertion of invasive monitoring, and administration of peripheral nerve blocks. Course Information: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. Prerequisite(s): NUNA 542.

NUNA 544. Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Residency 4. 12 hours.

This advanced practicum includes administration of anesthesia for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures or with significant co-morbidities that require invasive monitoring or special anesthesia techniques. NUNA 545. Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Residency 5. 10 hours.

The final advanced practicum in which the nurse anesthesia resident demonstrates the advanced knowledge and skills that comprise a foundation for independent nurse anesthesia practice in a variety of healthcare settings.
